My grandfather used to take me to the pool when I was little, and it quickly became one of my favorite things to do. He worked so hard to help me become a strong swimmer, and those memories have always stuck with me. 💧Why did you become a swim instructor? Because swimming is such an important life skill and I wanted to help others feel confident and safe in the water, just like I did growing up. 💧What do you love about teaching at SLWM? The kids! 📣 Tip Tuesday: Kicking Comes from the Hips! 🦵💦 One of the most common swim habits we help kids and adults unlearn is bending too much at the knees when they kick. It’s totally natural at first, but it actually makes swimming harder and less effective. 💡 Here’s the tip: Strong, efficient kicking starts at the hips, with straight legs and relaxed ankles. Think of it like fluttering the whole leg, not just from the knee down. This helps swimmers move forward with less splash and more control! 👉 Why it matters: ✅ Builds proper technique early ✅ Conserves energy ✅ Helps you stay horizontal and balanced in the water ✅ Prepares you for strokes like freestyle and backstroke We practice hip-driven kicking in every lesson, whether it’s on the wall, with a kickboard, or during a glide. Tip Tuesday: Finding the Right Goggles 🥽💧 The right goggles can completely change your swimmer’s experience, making lessons more comfortable, focused, and fun! 🏊‍♂️ But not all goggles are created equal... and finding the perfect pair might take a little trial and error. Your child’s age, face size, and any sensory sensitivities all play a big role in what works best. So if the first pair doesn’t go well, don’t give up! Tip Tuesday: Nail Your Flip Turn 🏊‍♀️ Want to make your flip turns faster, cleaner, and more efficient? Here are 4 tips to help: 💧1. Time Your Turn Count your strokes from the “T” on the ground to the wall so you flip at just the right distance. This eliminates the guess work so you don’t flip too early or too late and crash into the wall. For backstroke, utilize the flags overhead for your stroke count! 💧2. Keep It Tight Use a fast, controlled tuck (chin to chest, knees in) for a smooth, compact flip that maintains momentum. 💧3. Breathe Smart Take your last breath a stroke or two before initiating the turn. Exhale through your nose while flipping to stay relaxed and keep water out. 💧 4. Our March Instructor of the Month is Kaye! 🎉 With her decades of experience, she can teach any student who walks in the door! Kaye is always willing to take parent feedback into consideration when teaching to help create the best experience for her clients.
