Tip Tuesday: Don’t give up! 🩵
We often hear, “I’m worried swim lessons aren’t a good fit for my child.”
But tears don’t mean they can’t do it! Kids are incredibly resilient, they just need time to adjust. Work with your instructor to find what helps: a special toy, a fun pre-lesson routine, or whatever makes your child feel more comfortable.
Most importantly, stick with it! Learning to swim is important, but so is learning that even when something is hard, you can do hard things. 💪🏊♂️
🎥 Behind the scenes with Mr. Mark!
Building strong swimmers is about more than just learning strokes, it’s about building endurance, confidence, and real-life safety skills! 💪
In this lesson, Mr. Mark and his student are practicing a long-distance swim while also working on an important survival skill: rolling to his back to take a break and float when he needs to rest.
Way to go! 👏 We love seeing our swimmers put these life saving skills into practice! 🏊♂️🩵

Marin was such a bright spot on our team this summer! She was amazing with communication, especially on those unpredictable weather days, and was always willing to jump in and help with makeup lessons. 🏊♂️🩵

🩵 Haley brings so much joy and sunshine to every lesson at our Greenville location. She’s also a Level 1 Certified Adaptive Swim Whisperer, bringing her expertise, patience, and heart to every swimmer she teaches.
🩵 Denielle teaches at our Spartanburg location and has an incredible way of gently pushing swimmers outside their comfort zones while still making them feel safe and supported. She also brings phenomenal experience teaching adaptive lessons to our team!

🌟 Swimmer Spotlight: Kendall! 🌟
This summer, 4-year-old Kendall joined us for Summer Travel Lessons in Charlotte, and she absolutely crushed it! 💪🩵
She’s been working hard on her backstroke and side breathing for freestyle, while also mastering some BIG water safety skills like jumping in and getting back to the wall, floating on her back and rolling to swim, and climbing out of the pool all by herself! We’re so proud of Kendall and all the progress she made this summer!
And a big thank you to ALL of our Summer Travel swimmers for swimming with us. We hope to see you back in the water at one of our year-round locations! 🏊♂️
👂 TIP TUESDAY: Listening ears around water!
One of the most important things we teach at swim lessons isn’t just how to swim, it’s how to be a safe swimmer. That means learning to listen to a trusted adult around water.
We teach our swimmers to:
💧Ask before getting in
💧Ask before jumping, diving, or trying something new
💧Stop and listen when an adult gives a safety direction
Parents, this is a great one to double down on at home, too! The more consistently kids practice these habits, the more natural they become.
Swimming skills are important, but knowing when to stop, listen, and ask first is a water-safety skill, too. 🩵🏊♂️

💡 Tip Tuesday: Building Balance!
Learning to balance in the water is one of the biggest milestones for new swimmers! Maintaining a horizontal body position takes practice, just like learning to balance on a bike.
That's why we use "training wheels" like noodles or swim backpacks to help swimmers build core control and proper body position while still getting to feel more independent in the water.
Unlike puddle jumpers, these tools encourage good technique instead of keeping kids upright, restricting arm movement, and creating false confidence in the water.
Building real water confidence starts with learning to balance. 🏊♂️🩵🙌

🌟 Swimmer Spotlight: Rylee! 🌟
At just 4 years old, Rylee has been working so hard during her swim lessons, and it really shows. She's an intermediate swimmer who's been building her endurance, practicing all of her water safety skills, and gaining more confidence with every lesson.

We hope everyone has a fun, relaxing weekend celebrating with family and friends!
Just a quick reminder that we're closed for lessons today so our instructors can enjoy the holiday with their loved ones. We'll be back in the pool soon!
If you're spending time at the pool, lake, or beach this weekend, here are a few simple ways to help keep everyone safe:
🩵 Keep kids within arm's reach whenever they're in or around the water.
👀 Pick at least one adult to be the designated "Water Watcher." Put the phone away and give the water your full attention.
🛟 If you're boating or have a newer swimmer, make sure they're wearing a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
☀️ Don't forget the sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and take breaks from the heat.
🚫 And remember, pool floats are fun, but they're never a substitute for adult supervision.
We hope your weekend is full of laughter, good food, fireworks, and safe swimming. Have a wonderful 4th of July, and we'll see you back at lessons soon!

"I started swimming after my asthma made it difficult to keep playing football in 5th grade. Once I got in the pool, I had no trouble breathing and quickly fell in love with the sport."

💦 Tip Tuesday: Eliminate Potential Pool Dangers This Season 💦
One simple way to make your pool safer? Remove pool floaties when they’re not actively being used. Floaties left in the water can block visibility and make it harder to see if someone is underneath or in distress.
When the pool is not in use, be sure to:
✅ Put away pool floaties
✅ Remove toys from the pool
✅ Keep the pool area clear and safe
Leaving toys in the pool may tempt a child to try to retrieve them, which can quickly lead to an accident.
A few small habits can make a big difference in preventing water emergencies. Stay safe this pool season, and follow us for more swim safety tips! ☀️🏊

Stella has meant so much to our team, always an incredible instructor, patient, encouraging, and truly dedicated to every swimmer she worked with. She didn’t just teach skills, she built confidence, trust, and a love for the water in so many kids.

Goggles help kids feel more comfortable and confident in the water, especially when learning skills like putting their face in and blowing bubbles. When they can see clearly, they’re more willing to try! 🥽🩵🙌
What’s even better? Letting your child pick out their own fun style can help boost excitement for their swim lessons!
👉 Pro Tip: We recommend goggles that cover the eyes only (not full face masks). Masks can make it harder to learn important skills like breath control and blowing bubbles through the nose, key for water safety and staying calm in the water. 🌊

When swimmers keep their head steady, their hips stay up, their body stays aligned, and everything feels smoother (and straighter!). Moving your head can cause your body to twist, making you swim crooked instead of straight down the lane.

💦 Tip Tuesday: Goggles & Growing Confidence 💦
Goggles can be a great tool during swim lessons! They help swimmers feel more comfortable putting their face in the water, seeing clearly, and building confidence as they learn new skills. 🙌
That said… we always make sure swimmers also practice important self-rescue skills without goggles. Why? Because in a real-life water situation, goggles may not be on and safety skills should work anytime, anywhere.
It’s also totally normal for goggles to feel like a learning curve at first. For many kids, especially our more sensory-sensitive swimmers, goggles can feel tight, distracting, or overwhelming.
Our tips for success:
💧Choose goggles that fit comfortably (not too tight!)
💧Let your child help pick them out so they feel excited about wearing them
💧Practice wearing them around the house
💧Try them in the bathtub to get used to the feeling before lessons
The more familiar they feel, the more confident your swimmer will be when it’s time to hop in the pool! As always, our goal is safety first, while keeping lessons fun and encouraging every step of the way! 🩵🏊♂️

💧What got you into swimming?
When I was 15 years old, my hometown had a lifeguard shortage for the summer pools that year. So, I decided “hey I like swimming!” Maybe being a lifeguard would be a great summer job for me. What started as a part time job turned into over a decade of teaching and guarding.
💧Why did you become a swim instructor?
Shortly after becoming a lifeguard, I was approached with the opportunity to train as a swim instructor at the first outdoor pool I worked for. My time spent as a swim instructor quickly became my favorite part of working at the pool.
💧What do you love about teaching at SLWM?
I really enjoy one-on-one lessons with my students. It allows me to get to know them on a more personal level and allows me to tailor lessons to each individual. It’s a wonderful treat to watch my students hit goals and reach milestones!
💧Fun fact about you?
I have names for all of my house plants! 🪴

Is your swimmer working on breaststroke? The secret to a strong glide is all in the frog kick! Here’s how to help your swimmer improve:
✅ Feet Flex Out, Not Pointed
Instead of pointing toes like in freestyle, turn the feet outward and flex the ankles like “penguin feet.”
✅ Heels Up, Knees In
Bring heels up toward the hips with knees close together, no big splashes here!
✅ Big Circle, Strong Snap
Draw a wide circle with the feet, then snap them together quickly for power. Think “circle and squeeze!”
✅ Glide, Don’t Rush
After the kick, let the body glide like a torpedo. Rushing the next stroke too soon wastes energy.
🐸 Pro tip: Practicing the kick on a kickboard, noodle, or wall can help isolate good technique!
