SWIM INSTRUCTOR

Walker has lived in South Carolina her whole life and has always loved swimming. She’s an Eagle Scout, which says a lot about her leadership, responsibility, and commitment to helping others. She’s also been scuba diving since 2023, and her favorite way to spend free time is diving with her dad.

Walker believes everyone should learn to swim, both for safety and for fun, and she’s passionate about helping kids get there. She loves watching swimmers grow more comfortable and confident in the water, one small win at a time.

🌟 September Instructor of the Month: Katie 🌟 Katie is one of our amazing Head Instructors and a Level 1 Certified Swim Whisperer who teaches adaptive swim lessons at our Greenville location. She’s always willing to jump in and help wherever she’s needed, and she has such a gift for encouraging her swimmers to be brave, try new things, and achieve skills they may not have thought they could do! Tip Tuesday: Breath Control! 🫧 Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles! They’re more important than you might think. Learning breath control is a BIG part of becoming a confident swimmer, so we build this skill step-by-step. 🙌 First, we practice exhaling above the water. Then, we move to blowing bubbles with the mouth. Once they’ve got that down, we work on blowing bubbles through the nose… and this one can be a little trickier. Want to help your kid practice at home? Try: 👃 Having them pretend to blow their nose 🎶 Tell them to hum! Humming naturally sends air out through the nose. You can make it extra fun by having them hum a favorite song! A little practice goes a long way! 🫧🏊‍♂️

🌟 Swimmer Spotlight: Tate! 🌟 Tate is 3 years old and, safe to say, he’s a little fish! 🐠 He started his very first lesson a little hesitant, but by lessons #2 and #3, he was putting his eyes in the water and beginning to swim independently! He LOVES retrieving toys from the bottom of the pool and, in just 8 lessons, Tate accomplished all of his water safety and self-rescue skills! 🙌🩵 And to top it all off, he was an amazing listener throughout his lessons. Way to go, Tate! 🏊‍♂️👏

🚨 BIG NEWS, SWIM FAMILIES! 🚨 We’re SO excited to officially announce that Adaptive Swim Lessons are now part of Swim Lessons with Mary! 🙌 Every swimmer deserves to feel safe, confident, and successful in the water. Sometimes that means approaching lessons a little differently. Our adaptive lessons are: 💧1-on-1 and individualized 💧Built around each swimmer’s unique needs 💧Adapted to their learning style and comfort level 💧Focused on water safety, confidence, and independence 💧Taught by instructors with specialized Swim Whisperers® training We’re sharing all about our new program, why adaptive lessons are so important, and what parents can expect in our newest blog! There’s no one-size-fits-all swimmer, so why should there be one-size-fits-all lessons? 🏊‍♂️🩵

Tip Tuesday: Don’t give up! 🩵 We often hear, “I’m worried swim lessons aren’t a good fit for my child.” But tears don’t mean they can’t do it! Kids are incredibly resilient, they just need time to adjust. Work with your instructor to find what helps: a special toy, a fun pre-lesson routine, or whatever makes your child feel more comfortable. Most importantly, stick with it! Learning to swim is important, but so is learning that even when something is hard, you can do hard things. 💪🏊‍♂️

🎥 Behind the scenes with Mr. Mark! Building strong swimmers is about more than just learning strokes, it’s about building endurance, confidence, and real-life safety skills! 💪 In this lesson, Mr. Mark and his student are practicing a long-distance swim while also working on an important survival skill: rolling to his back to take a break and float when he needs to rest. Way to go! 👏 We love seeing our swimmers put these life saving skills into practice! 🏊‍♂️🩵

☀️ August Instructor of the Month: Marin! ☀️ Marin was such a bright spot on our team this summer! She was amazing with communication, especially on those unpredictable weather days, and was always willing to jump in and help with makeup lessons. 🏊‍♂️🩵 She’s truly a ray of sunshine, and we’re so proud to have her on our summer team! Congrats, Marin! 🎉

Tip Tuesday: Back to School Consistency ✏️📚🚌 As school gets back into full swing, it’s easy to think of swim lessons as just another after-school activity to fit into the schedule. But swimming is different. It’s a lifelong skill, and one that could save your child’s life. So even when life gets busy, keep making swim lessons a priority. Consistency builds confidence, skills, and water safety that last far beyond childhood. 🏊‍♂️🩵

She’s also a Level 1 Certified Adaptive Swim Whisperer, bringing her expertise, patience, and heart to every swimmer she teaches. 🩵 Denielle teaches at our Spartanburg location and has an incredible way of gently pushing swimmers outside their comfort zones while still making them feel safe and supported. She also brings phenomenal experience teaching adaptive lessons to our team! We’re so lucky to have both of these incredible instructors on our team. 🌟 Swimmer Spotlight: Kendall! 🌟 This summer, 4-year-old Kendall joined us for Summer Travel Lessons in Charlotte, and she absolutely crushed it! 💪🩵 She’s been working hard on her backstroke and side breathing for freestyle, while also mastering some BIG water safety skills like jumping in and getting back to the wall, floating on her back and rolling to swim, and climbing out of the pool all by herself! We’re so proud of Kendall and all the progress she made this summer! And a big thank you to ALL of our Summer Travel swimmers for swimming with us. We hope to see you back in the water at one of our year-round locations! 🏊‍♂️

👂 TIP TUESDAY: Listening ears around water! One of the most important things we teach at swim lessons isn’t just how to swim, it’s how to be a safe swimmer. That means learning to listen to a trusted adult around water. We teach our swimmers to: 💧Ask before getting in 💧Ask before jumping, diving, or trying something new 💧Stop and listen when an adult gives a safety direction Parents, this is a great one to double down on at home, too! The more consistently kids practice these habits, the more natural they become. Swimming skills are important, but knowing when to stop, listen, and ask first is a water-safety skill, too. 🩵🏊‍♂️

Myth or fact? ❌ Floaties keep kids safe. ❌ Shallow water isn't dangerous. ❌ "Dry drowning" is a real diagnosis. If you've heard any of these, you're not alone, but they're not the whole story. 💡 Tip Tuesday: Building Balance! Learning to balance in the water is one of the biggest milestones for new swimmers! Maintaining a horizontal body position takes practice, just like learning to balance on a bike. That's why we use "training wheels" like noodles or swim backpacks to help swimmers build core control and proper body position while still getting to feel more independent in the water. Unlike puddle jumpers, these tools encourage good technique instead of keeping kids upright, restricting arm movement, and creating false confidence in the water. Building real water confidence starts with learning to balance. 🏊‍♂️🩵🙌

🇺🇸 Happy 4th of July Weekend! 🇺🇸 We hope everyone has a fun, relaxing weekend celebrating with family and friends! Just a quick reminder that we're closed for lessons today so our instructors can enjoy the holiday with their loved ones. We'll be back in the pool soon! If you're spending time at the pool, lake, or beach this weekend, here are a few simple ways to help keep everyone safe: 🩵 Keep kids within arm's reach whenever they're in or around the water. 👀 Pick at least one adult to be the designated "Water Watcher." Put the phone away and give the water your full attention. 🛟 If you're boating or have a newer swimmer, make sure they're wearing a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. ☀️ Don't forget the sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and take breaks from the heat. 🚫 And remember, pool floats are fun, but they're never a substitute for adult supervision. Meet Instructor Zac! 👋🏊‍♂️ We're so excited to have Zac on the SLWM team, and he's now accepting bookings this month! Get to know him some more down below! 👇 💧What got you into swimming? "I started swimming after my asthma made it difficult to keep playing football in 5th grade. Once I got in the pool, I had no trouble breathing and quickly fell in love with the sport." 🏊 Experience: "I've been teaching for about five years and have worked with both children and adults across all skill levels." 🩵 Why SLWM? Today is Katie T’s last day teaching with Swim Lessons with Mary. While we are so sad to see her go, we are incredibly excited for her as she steps away for a time to pursue other passion projects here in the Upstate. We wish her nothing but happiness and success in this next chapter. 🩵 Katie has made such a lasting impact on so many students and families during her time with SLWM. Her kindness, encouragement, patience, and joyful spirit brought confidence and smiles to every lesson she taught. 💦 Tip Tuesday: Eliminate Potential Pool Dangers This Season 💦 One simple way to make your pool safer? Remove pool floaties when they’re not actively being used. Floaties left in the water can block visibility and make it harder to see if someone is underneath or in distress. When the pool is not in use, be sure to: ✅ Put away pool floaties ✅ Remove toys from the pool ✅ Keep the pool area clear and safe Leaving toys in the pool may tempt a child to try to retrieve them, which can quickly lead to an accident. A few small habits can make a big difference in preventing water emergencies. It’s Stella’s last week with SLWM! 🥹🩵 Stella has meant so much to our team, always an incredible instructor, patient, encouraging, and truly dedicated to every swimmer she worked with. She didn’t just teach skills, she built confidence, trust, and a love for the water in so many kids. We are so grateful for the impact she’s made, and we know her swimmers (and their families!) feel the same. As she heads into her final year of college and begins her journey toward a career in the medical field and PA school, we couldn’t be more proud. They are lucky to have her, just like we were. One of the biggest keys to a strong backstroke? 💦 Tip Tuesday: Goggles & Growing Confidence 💦 Goggles can be a great tool during swim lessons! They help swimmers feel more comfortable putting their face in the water, seeing clearly, and building confidence as they learn new skills. 🙌 That said… we always make sure swimmers also practice important self-rescue skills without goggles. Why? Because in a real-life water situation, goggles may not be on and safety skills should work anytime, anywhere. It’s also totally normal for goggles to feel like a learning curve at first. For many kids, especially our more sensory-sensitive swimmers, goggles can feel tight, distracting, or overwhelming. Our tips for success: 💧Choose goggles that fit comfortably (not too tight!) 💧Let your child help pick them out so they feel excited about wearing them 💧Practice wearing them around the house 💧Try them in the bathtub to get used to the feeling before lessons The more familiar they feel, the more confident your swimmer will be when it’s time to hop in the pool! The sweetest full-circle moment! How special that on the 6th anniversary of SLWM’s official incorporation, we got to celebrate at the @kidaroundsc Kaboom Awards 🥇1st place for Best Place to Splash or Swim and a finalist for Best Sports Program. This recognition belongs to my incredible team. Their hard work, heart, and dedication every single day is what got us here. I’m so proud of the way they show up for our swimmers, for each other, and for our mission to make our community safer and to end drowning through personalized, 1-1 instruction. I’m SO thankful for the families who have cheered us on along the way. What makes this moment even more meaningful is knowing this dream didn’t start six years ago, it started when I was 15, teaching hundreds of students on my own and building the foundation for everything SLWM is today. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for the amazing swimmers and families that have supported SLWM over the past 13 years.
